How GSTR-2B reconciliation works

GSTR-2B reconciliation ensures the ITC you claim on your GSTR-3B matches what your suppliers have reported in their GSTR-1 filings.

1

Download GSTR-2B

Log in to the GST portal on or after the 14th and download your GSTR-2B for the return period. This is the static, auto-populated ITC statement.

2

Export purchase register

Pull all purchase invoices from your accounting system for the same period, including supplier GSTIN, invoice details, and GST amounts.

3

Match invoice by invoice

Compare each purchase invoice in your books against the corresponding entry in GSTR-2B. Match on supplier GSTIN, invoice number, and GST amounts.

4

Classify variances

Group mismatches into categories: missing in GSTR-2B (supplier did not file), amount differences, invoice number mismatches, or invoices in GSTR-2B but not in books.

5

Resolve and claim ITC

Follow up with suppliers for missing or incorrect entries. Claim only the ITC that is reflected in GSTR-2B when filing your GSTR-3B to stay compliant.

Do this, avoid that

ITC eligibility under GST depends on your suppliers filing correctly. These practices keep your claims clean and defensible.

✓ Do
Reconcile as soon as GSTR-2B is availableGSTR-2B is generated on the 14th and GSTR-3B is due on the 20th. Starting early gives you six days to chase suppliers and resolve mismatches.
Match on supplier GSTIN and invoice number firstThese two fields uniquely identify an invoice. Match them before comparing amounts. A GSTIN mismatch means the invoice belongs to a different entity.
Follow up with suppliers in writingSend a reconciliation statement to each supplier with mismatches. A written trail is essential if the ITC is ever questioned during an assessment.
Maintain a running tracker of unresolved itemsITC that does not appear in GSTR-2B this month may appear next month when the supplier files late. Track open items across periods to avoid duplicate claims.
Review reverse charge entries separatelyReverse charge ITC is self-assessed and does not depend on supplier filing. Reconcile it against your reverse charge liability, not against GSTR-2B.
✗ Avoid
Claiming ITC not reflected in GSTR-2BUnder current rules, ITC claims beyond the GSTR-2B limit attract scrutiny and potential demand notices. Stick to what GSTR-2B shows until the supplier corrects their filing.
Reconciling against GSTR-2A instead of GSTR-2BGSTR-2A is dynamic and changes with every supplier amendment. GSTR-2B is the static, legally valid statement for ITC claims. Always reconcile against GSTR-2B.
Ignoring small variancesSmall amount differences (rounding, rate mismatches) compound over months. Investigate every variance, no matter how small, to prevent cumulative ITC exposure.
Filing GSTR-3B before completing reconciliationOnce GSTR-3B is filed, correcting ITC claims requires amendments in future returns. Complete the reconciliation before filing to get it right the first time.
Treating zero-rated and exempt supplies as ITC-eligibleNot all purchases carry eligible ITC. Verify the supply type (taxable, exempt, zero-rated) before including a purchase invoice in your ITC claim.

GSTR-2B reconciliation terms, explained

GSTR-2B
A static, auto-populated monthly statement generated on the 14th of each month from your suppliers' GSTR-1 filings. It shows the ITC available to you and is the legal basis for claiming ITC on GSTR-3B.
Input Tax Credit (ITC)
The GST paid on purchases of goods or services used for business purposes, which can be set off against your output GST liability. Eligible ITC reduces your net tax payment.
Reverse Charge Mechanism
A mechanism where the recipient of goods or services pays the GST instead of the supplier. Reverse charge ITC is self-assessed and does not depend on supplier GSTR-1 filing.
GSTR-1
The monthly or quarterly return filed by suppliers detailing their outward supplies (sales). Your suppliers' GSTR-1 data flows into your GSTR-2B as available ITC.
Auto-populated return
A GST return whose data is automatically filled from other returns filed in the GST ecosystem. GSTR-2B is auto-populated from your suppliers' GSTR-1 and ISD returns.
Credit note
A document issued by the supplier to reduce the value of an original invoice. Credit notes reduce your available ITC and must be reflected in both your books and GSTR-2B reconciliation.
Debit note
A document issued by the supplier to increase the value of an original invoice (for example, price revisions). Debit notes increase your available ITC when reflected in the supplier's GSTR-1.
Place of supply
The location where goods are delivered or services are consumed, which determines whether IGST (inter-state) or CGST+SGST (intra-state) applies to the transaction.
Input Service Distributor (ISD)
An office of a business that receives invoices for input services and distributes the ITC to other offices or units of the same business that use those services.

Frequently asked questions

GSTR-2B reconciliation is the process of matching the Input Tax Credit recorded in your purchase register against the ITC auto-populated in GSTR-2B. GSTR-2B is generated from your suppliers' GSTR-1 filings, so any mismatch means either your books or a supplier's filing has an error that needs resolution before you claim the ITC.

Yes. There is no cost, no account creation, and no watermark on any format. The interactive tool runs entirely in your browser and the downloadable files are yours to keep and reuse.

GSTR-2A is a dynamic statement that changes every time a supplier files or amends their GSTR-1. GSTR-2B is a static, monthly statement generated on the 14th of each month and does not change after generation. GSTR-2B is the legally valid basis for claiming ITC.

Monthly, as soon as the GSTR-2B is generated (14th of the following month). This gives you time to follow up with suppliers on mismatches before the GSTR-3B filing deadline on the 20th.

The supplier has either not filed their GSTR-1, filed it late, or entered incorrect details (wrong GSTIN, invoice number, or amounts). Contact the supplier, verify the invoice details, and ask them to file or amend their GSTR-1.

Under the current rules, ITC claims are subject to GSTR-2B matching. ITC not appearing in GSTR-2B can be claimed provisionally up to a limit, but the safest approach is to ensure the supplier files correctly so the ITC appears in GSTR-2B.

Templates work when you have a handful of suppliers and a manageable number of purchase invoices per month. Once your supplier base grows into hundreds or your monthly invoices exceed a few dozen, automation handles bulk matching, supplier follow-ups, and ITC tracking far more reliably.
